CNY:Lesson 1 - What is Chinese New Year Inquiry

Lesson 1 launches the Chinese New Year unit with curiosity first. Instead of starting with explanations, students begin by noticing and wondering.

The lesson opens with rich Chinese New Year photos. Students are invited to observe carefully and share what they see using the simple sentence starter:

我看到……
I see…

This lowers the language barrier and allows all learners to participate, whether they are beginners or more advanced speakers.

Next, student questions are captured on a Wonder Wall, shifting learning from teacher-led to student-driven inquiry. Students ask questions using:

我想知道为什么……
I wonder why…

Why are things red?
Why do people eat certain foods?
Why is Chinese New Year so important?

These questions become the heart of the unit, guiding future lessons on customs, food, traditions, and the zodiac.

Lesson 1 sets a powerful tone: students as thinkers, observers, and question-askers, using Chinese meaningfully from day one.
