How to use Picture Talks in the Chinese classroom

At our latest webinar, teachers of Chinese explored how a single image can spark natural conversation, build curiosity, and inspire meaningful Chinese language use - no textbook required! Teachers learned how to guide students from simple “one-word” responses to full sentences and stories, using visuals as the foundation for comprehensible input and student-led speaking practice.

Some of the key takeaways included:

  • Why silence isn’t a bad thing: It’s part of the thinking process.

  • How to ask better questions: “What do you see?” can lead to “What’s happening?” and then “Why?”

  • Layering language levels: From beginner labeling to storytelling for advanced learners.

  • Creating curiosity: Using funny, detailed, or mysterious images to engage students.

Teachers left with ready-to-use ideas and a renewed sense of joy in helping students speak more Chinese - confidently and naturally.
