Chinese Speaking: Spring Picture Talk

Busy, detailed pictures are wonderful tools for getting students to speak more Chinese in class. When students look at a lively image like a spring day in the park, they naturally want to describe what they see. Teachers can guide students to use simple vocabulary and sentence patterns to talk about people, animals, and actions in the picture.

Start by asking students to observe the picture carefully. Encourage them to notice who is in the park, what people are doing, and what objects they can see. This type of visual activity lowers pressure because students do not need to invent ideas—the picture provides the context. Even beginner students can participate by naming objects or forming simple sentences such as “有人在跑步” or “小狗在玩”.

Teachers can also extend the activity by asking students to count objects, describe actions, or create short stories about the people in the picture. For example, students might imagine what the people at the picnic are eating or why someone is taking photos near the pond. Activities like this encourage students to speak more naturally and help them build confidence using Chinese.

Pictures like this work especially well for pair discussions, small group conversations, and whole-class speaking practice, making them a simple but powerful way to increase student language output.
